TROJENA is a project to change the concept of global mountain tourism by establishing an eco-friendly tourism system in NEOM, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It was announced by His Royal Highness Mohammed Bin Salman Bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince and Chairman of the NEOM Board of Directors, on March 30, 2022.

The TROJENA project will offer a year-round skiing option on mountaintops ranging from 1,500 m to 2,600 m high, which is set to be the first outdoor sports experience on mountains in the Kingdom. Moreover, several events and activities for adventure enthusiasts will be completed by 2026.

Location of TROJENA project

The TROJENA project is located in the center of NEOM, 50 km away from the Gulf of Aqaba coast on the Red Sea. It covers an area of 60,000 m², with a space of about 42,000 m² allocated for shops and restaurants. Three international airports are located in the vicinity of the project: NEOM Bay Airport, Tabuk International Airport and Aqaba Airport. Moreover, 40 percent of the world's population can access the TROJENA project within six hours of their location by airplane.

The climate of TROJENA is characterized by cold temperatures that drop below zero in the winter, while year-round temperatures are generally ten degrees cooler than the rest of the region. Therefore, the construction work adheres to the principles of ecotourism while reducing activities with harmful environmental effects and achieving sustainability.

TROJENA objective

The TROJENA project contributes to economic growth, transforms the mountain region into a global eco-friendly tourist destination, in addition to preserving, developing and leveraging nature's elements, not to mention diversifying income sources and enhancing the Kingdom's economic growth.

By 2030, the project will be able to provide more than ten thousand job opportunities, add SAR3 billion to the GDP, build 2,200 housing units, as well as 3,600 five- and four-star hotel rooms, apartments, and therapy rooms, and attract more than seven hundred thousand tourists and about seven thousand residents from TROJENA and the surrounding residential areas.

Sections of the TROJENA project

The TROJENA project will include six entertainment options: The Gateway, known as the Vault, is the main portal of the TROJENA project. It is a village built vertically inside the mountains. The Vault contains a digital hub, a technical and media space, a conference hall, and a cognitive reality that allows visitors to travel to new worlds. The Discover cluster, an observatory designed with advanced technologies, is located south of the Vault. It allows visitors to gaze upon the stars and galaxies. The Valley, a freshwater lake designed at the top of the mountain, will include water sports, events, and outdoor activities. The Explore cluster is a wildlife reserve and home to rare wildlife and unique geological features.

Entertainment options will also include the Relax cluster, a program that involves activities related to health and movement and offers care and treatment services. The Fun cluster is an ice ski village. It is 2,400 m high and includes its own slopes and trails.

Activities of the TROJENA project

The project will organize events and festivals all year round according to the weather in several seasons. The adventure season involves activities like mountain biking, climbing, paragliding, and triathlon. The lake season involves the food festival, cultural week, art exhibitions, and light-based performances.

It will also present the season of welfare and health regeneration, involving a yoga resort, and the winter season, involving synthetic ice skating. The project offers 30 km of slopes, as well as sports, artistic, musical, and cultural activities.

The project will include landmarks, such as The Bow, which is a building under the lake where weddings will be held, in addition to concerts and conferences, and will include a five-star hotel, luxury residences, and restaurants. Moreover, Ultra-luxury Palaces are a collection of differently designed palaces located in distinct places. Slope Residences is a residential complex near the Ski Village overlooking the lake.

On October 17, 2022, NEOM, represented by the Hotel Development Department, the arm responsible for establishing and operating hotels of the future and building a hospitality ecosystem in NEOM, has signed the first partnership agreement in the field of hospitality with Ennismore. The agreement aims to launch a series of hotel facilities that offer unparalleled hospitality experiences in TROJENA.
