King Abdullah Medical City is a non-profit medical establishment offering specialized therapeutic and health care services in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is the only referral quaternary hospital in Makkah al-Mukarramah Province.

Establishment of King Abdullah Medical City

The city contributes to offering medical and health services to the residents of Makkah al-Mukarramah and Hajj and Umrah pilgrims year-round. It was inaugurated in November 2009 and has a capacity of 1,500 beds.

It is located in the vicinity of the Holy Sites. It enjoys advanced medical capacities and comprises various distinguished centers, such as the Heart Health Center, Oncology Center, Specialized Surgeries Center, Eye Health Center, Neuroscience Center, Endoscopy and Liver Center, Organ Transplant Center, and Head, Neck, and Cranial Floor Center.

King Abdullah Medical City services

King Abdullah Medical City's services are offered through many specialist departments: the Department of Clinical Simulation, the Department of Administrative Training, the Department of High Studies and Scholarships, the Department of Health Training, the Department of Medical Continuing Education, and the Department of Health Education. The city directly coordinates with schools' health affairs departments to raise health awareness among students.

To keep pace with the advancement of medical services, the medical city succeeded, in 2021, in activating anesthesia on the same date of surgery for heart patients. In this respect, patients are clinically examined in a specific clinic for heart surgery one day before their surgery. They are fully prepared and listed under specific lists for approval on the same day of their surgery, subject to specific cases. This has borne positive results and achieved a significant decrease in terms of the hospital's stay duration. It has also improved resource use, minimized waste, and increased capacity.

The heart health center at King Abdullah Medical City offers a wide array of medical services in the field of heart disease and surgery, following global standards. It receives pilgrims suffering from heart conditions requiring interventions, including cardiac catheterization or heart surgeries. All cases requiring heart care services are admitted.

Achievements of King Abdullah Medical City

In addition to the advanced medical services it offers, King Abdullah Medical City has realized many achievements since its establishment, in line with the approach to advancement it has adopted. In 2021, the city was accredited by the Ministry of Health as a referral hospital for responding to nuclear and radiation emergencies. This fell under the ministry's project for the rehabilitation of referral hospitals for responding to emergencies. Accreditation was granted upon meeting the requirements and criteria for responding to radiation crises, thus becoming one of the first referral hospitals in the Kingdom.

The medical city continued to realize achievements: in 2022, it obtained the HIMSS EMRAM Stage 6 certification for electronic health record systems from the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). The certification was granted upon meeting the requirements, which translated into applying the highest quality standards in using electronic medical records and all electronic health applications to promote healthcare and patient safety.
