Historical mosques are among the landmarks of cultural and architectural heritage in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. They are characterized by their simplicity and lack of ornamentation. These historical mosques are distributed across various cities and provinces in the Kingdom.
Among the historical mosques in the Kingdom are the mosques of the holy sites in Makkah al-Mukarramah, Masjid Quba, the Seven Mosques in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah, and Masjid al-Taneem and Masjid al-Ji'ranah in Makkah al-Mukarramah. In addition to the historic Masjid Jawatha in al-Ahsa Governorate in the Eastern Province.
The historical mosques in the Kingdom receive special attention, with a dedicated project focused on their development: the Mohammed Bin Salman Project for the Development of Historical Mosques.
The project is focused on restoring and rehabilitating 130 historical mosques across various provinces of the Kingdom, aiming to preserve the architectural and cultural characteristics of each of these mosques.
