How Many Muezzins Are There in the Prophet’s Mosque?
The call to prayer at the Prophet’s Mosque in Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah is performed by seventeen Muezzins from Al-Mukabbiriya, the designated area for calling the Adhan, Iqamah, repeating after the Imam during prayer, and making the Eid Takbir. Each day, three Muezzins take turns calling the Adhan. The Administration of Imams and Muezzins Affairs, under the Religious Affairs Presidency of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque, oversees the preparation of loudspeakers and the provision of services and needs for the Imams and Muezzins.
The Regulatory Bylaw for Imams and Muezzins Affairs in the Two Holy Mosques regulates the work of the Muezzins at the Prophet’s Mosque. To be appointed as a Muezzin, one must be a Saudi national, have exceptional performance and a pleasant voice, be proficient in proper pronunciation, hold a degree from one of the Sharia sciences colleges in Saudi Arabia, be knowledgeable in the rulings of the adhan and prayer, and embody moderation and balance.
