The Saudi U-17 football national team (under seventeen years old) won the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Scotland on July 24, 1989, after defeating the Scotland national team in the final match on penalty shoot-out (five-four) after the regular time ended in a (two-two) draw. This accomplishment made the Saudi U-17 national team the first Asian and Arab team to accomplish this global achievement.

The coach was the Brazilian Ivo Wortmann, with team manager Abdullah Jassim and delegation supervisor Abdullah Faraj al-Saqr.

The Saudi U-17 national team began its journey by drawing with Portugal and Guinea in the first and second rounds with scores of (two-two). They then secured a victory against Colombia (one-zero), finishing second in Group D with four points, to draw with Portugal but behind on goal difference. They continued their journey by winning Nigeria on penalties (two-zero), then winning Bahrain, one-zero, in the semifinals to advance to the final match against Scotland. The final ended in a (two-two) draw after extra time, and the Kingdom won (five-four) on penalties. The final was held at Hampden Park Stadium in the presence of 58,000 spectators.
