Wadi al-Dawasir Solar PV Park is a Saudi project to produce photovoltaic energy, located in Wadi al-Dawasir governorate in Riyadh Province, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and launched by the Ministry of Energy to incentivize Saudi companies to contribute to the renewable energy sector.
The Wadi al-Dawasir 120 MW solar PV plant was announced as part of the third phase of the National Renewable Energy Program, with a total capacity of 1,200 MW, launched by the Ministry of Energy on January 9, 2020.
Wadi al-Dawasir Solar PV Park Project significance
The Wadi al-Dawasir Solar PV Park provides electricity to 16,500 homes and saves annually 659,000 barrels of fuel that were consumed in conventional electricity generation, reducing CO2 emissions by 225,000 t per year.
The program began its plan to diversify domestic energy sources and stimulate economic development with the aim of achieving sustainable economic stability and supporting the development of the Kingdom's energy sector based on the Kingdom's commitment to reduce CO2 emissions and reach zero carbon.
The National Renewable Energy Program, which launched the Wadi al-Dawasir Solar PV Project, among others, is a strategic initiative launched under the umbrella of Saudi Vision 2030 and the King Salman Renewable Energy Initiative. The program aims to maximize the Kingdom's share of renewable energy production.
Contribution of Wadi al-Dawasir Solar PV Park Project to the national economy
The Wadi al-Dawasir Solar PV Park Project is compatible with local content requirements, relying on local components by at least 17 percent, based on the mechanisms set by the Local Content and Government Procurement Authority. The project's work is measured according to a methodology that focuses on local content’s added value to the national economy.
Work on the project coincides with other similar projects, namely the eighty MW Layla solar independent power project, the three hundred MW Saad solar project, and the seven hundred MW ar-Rass solar PV park.
The Kingdom's environmental protection efforts hinge on balancing economic and social growth on the one hand and increasing reliance on renewable energy projects on the other to address global environmental challenges, including climate change and the protection of marine and terrestrial ecosystems.
