Since its founding, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has focused on military industries. In 1949, Founding King Abdulaziz Bin Abdulrahman Al Saud ordered the establishment of military factories, which later became the General Organization for Military Industries. In 2013, it was renamed the General Authority for Military Industries (GAMI), overseeing sixteen production lines that manufacture a variety of military equipment, including light and medium ammunition, shells, control and sensing devices, military vehicles, transporters, armored vehicles, drones, as well as military clothing and gear.
When Crown Prince and Prime Minister, His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Bin Abdulaziz, launched Saudi Vision 2030, one of its objectives was to localize weapons manufacturing and support military industries in Saudi Arabia, aiming to exceed 50 percent localization by 2030. As part of this effort, the Saudi Arabian Military Industries (SAMI) was established with the goal of becoming one of the world’s top twenty-five defense companies by 2030. Additionally, GAMI was founded to regulate, develop, and oversee the performance of the military industry sector.
