The fifteenth session of the G20 Summit meetings was held on November 21–22, 2020, in Riyadh, due to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's pivotal role on regional and global levels, its political and economic stature, as well as the international interest in Saudi Vision 2030 and its prominent role in supporting the global economy and sustainable growth by maintaining stability in global oil markets.

The Kingdom adopted the slogan "let us inspire the world with our summit" after assuming the presidency of the G20 from Japan on December 1, 2019. During its presidency year, it emerged as one of the most influential economies globally, ranking among the top ten countries in addressing the economic repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The announcement of the Kingdom's presidency of the G20 meetings for 2020 was made during the Hamburg Summit in 2017 in Germany. The Kingdom began preparations to host the summit by establishing the "Saudi G20 Secretariat" to oversee the group's activities during its presidency. It also worked on shaping an agenda aimed at advancing the group's achievements and priorities in global economic and development matters.

The G20 Forum is considered one of the most important economic forums globally, comprising industrialized nations and emerging economies. The G20 countries represent two-thirds of the world's population, 85 percent of the global economy, and 75 percent of international trade.
