The largest governorate in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by area is al-Ahsa Governorate, with an area of 375,000 km². It is administratively affiliated with the Eastern Province and constitutes 69 percent of its area, encompassing large parts of al-Rub' al-Khali (Empty Quarter).

Al-Ahsa Governorate includes an oasis that is home to approximately 96.3 percent of its population, with the rest distributed across ten main cities and eighty villages and hamlets. Al-Ahsa Oasis was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2018 as the largest palm oasis in the world.

Al-Ahsa Governorate is home to historical sites dating back more than five hundred years BCE. It also hosts the Ghawar Field, one of the Kingdom's major oil fields. In terms of agriculture, the governorate contains approximately three million palm trees, producing around 120,000 t of dates annually.
