Jeddah Governorate is home to five universities, including two public universities: King Abdulaziz University and the University of Jeddah. Additionally, there are three private universities: the University of Business and Technology, Effat University, and Dar al-Hekma University.

King Abdulaziz University, established in 1967 as a private university, was among the first universities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to admit Saudi women for bachelor's degree studies. In 1968, the university welcomed its first cohort of thirty female students, marking a milestone for women's education in Saudi universities. In 1971, King Abdulaziz University became a public university following a decision by the Council of Ministers to incorporate the university into the state. All universities in Saudi Arabia operate under the Universities Law issued in 2019. The Council of Universities' Affairs oversees university regulations, sets policies, and establishes governing frameworks. Additionally, the Board of Trustees is responsible for the university's governance and monitoring its academic, administrative, and financial performance in accordance with the law's provisions.
