Al-Awja Palace is positioned on the banks of Wadi Hanifah, north of Turaif District, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This district served as the ruling center of the First Saudi State, with remnants of this heritage still visible today.
Designation of al-Awja Palace
King Salman chose the designation "al-Awja" for both his farm and palace, recognizing the historical significance of the term, which reflects the chivalric spirit of Al Saud in battle. "Al-Awja" is also one of the names of Diriyah, the historic capital of the Saudi State, symbolizing Diriyah’s geographical and natural features.
Features of al-Awja Palace
Al-Awja Palace was constructed using mudbrick, as per King Salman Bin Abdulaziz's personal request. The design features locally crafted old wooden doors, known for their intricate decorations and ornaments, which are characteristic of the architectural history of the Najd region. Additionally, the walls of the palace are adorned with historic rifles once used by Founding King Abdulaziz Bin Abdulrahman Al Saud during his campaigns to unify the Kingdom.
