King Saud Medical City (KSMC) is one of the entities responsible for providing medical and healthcare services in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through its affiliated hospitals, treatment centers, and research facilities. Its headquarters is located in the Shumaisi District in the capital, Riyadh, and it is known to the residents of Riyadh as al- Shumaisi Hospital.
KSMC was established during the reign of King Saud Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, originally under the name King Saud Medical Complex on November 11, 1956. This name was retained for over half a century. Then, in 2010, a decision was made to change the name to King Saud Medical City.
Establishment of KSMC
Since its establishment, KSMC has witnessed several significant developments, including the opening of outpatient clinics in 1962, the establishment of the central laboratory and blood bank in 1963, the founding of a physical therapy department in 1973, the establishment of a specialized department for kidney diseases in 1976, and the opening of a specialized dental center in 1984.
Additionally, three hospitals, namely the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, the Pediatric Hospital, and the General Hospital were merged and combined under the name Riyadh Medical Complex in 1992. Furthermore, the King Fahd Kidney Center was established in 2001.
Departments of KSMC
KSMC employs approximately nine thousand male and female employees of various nationalities, with diverse specializations and academic degrees, working in various departments of the city. It includes several hospitals and medical centers, including the General Hospital, Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, Pediatric Hospital, King Fahd Kidney Center, and the Dental Center. The General Hospital at KSMC comprises several departments, including cardiology, plastic and burns surgery, general surgery, orthopedic surgery, urological surgery, chest surgery, otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat), forensic medicine, intensive care unit, and others.
KSMC Research Center
KSMC Research Center conducts specialized scientific research, including clinical research, in collaboration with a number of medical researchers both within and outside the center. Patients can also participate in the center's research and studies. The city also offers training programs and specialized academic programs, such as the clinical pharmacy residency program. In addition, it provides health education services and raises awareness about patients' rights and responsibilities.
