The Saudi Arabian Handball Federation is one of the sports federations in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, responsible for handball, and its primary representative in local and international championships. It is supervised by the Ministry of Sport and the Saudi Olympic Committee. The federation was established in 1975, and its headquarters is in the capital, Riyadh.
It joined the International Handball Federation, the Asian Handball Federation, and the Arab Handball Federation in 1975. It also became a Gulf Handball Organizing Committee member in December 1983.
Mandates of the Saudi Handball Federation
The federation has several mandates, the most prominent of which are developing Saudi handball, regulating local competitions, hosting regional, continental, and international championships, and preparing coaches and players to compete in international championships.
Saudi Handball Championships
The Saudi Arabian Handball Federation oversees twenty-two local handball tournaments, including the Prince Faisal Bin Fahd Championship for Premier League Clubs, the First Division Clubs League Championship, the Premier League Championship for Youth, the Premier League Championship for Juniors, the Prince Sultan Bin Fahd Cup Championship, the Elite Championship for Adults, the Elite Championship for Youth, the Elite Championship for Juniors, the Women's Handball League, with a total of 2,150 registered players, eighty-one clubs, and 230 referees.
Achievements of the Saudi Arabian Handball Federation
Many achievements have been made at both the local and international levels, including the Saudi national team qualifying for the World Cup ten times in the years (1997, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2009, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2023). Additionally, the youth national team qualified for the World Cup in the years (1979, 1997, 2017, and 2023), and the junior national team qualified for the World Cup in (2019 and 2023).
World Club Handball Championship 'Super Globe'
The Kingdom hosted the World Club Handball Championship 'Super Globe', the highest-ranked competition in the world, for four years, from 2019 to 2023.
First women's handball league
In 2021, the Saudi Arabian Handball Federation, represented by the Women's Committee, organized the "First Women's Handball League," which is considered the first official women's league in the history of the sport since the establishment of the Saudi Arabian Handball Federation. The competition took place at the sports hall of Dar al-Uloom University in Riyadh, with the participation of six teams divided into two groups. The first group included teams: Najd, Jeddah, Hands, and al-Majd, while the second group included Najd al-Mustaqbal, Elite, and al-Himma. The matches were officiated by Saudi referees who participated in the courses organized by the Handball Federation in collaboration with the Leadership Preparation Institute at the Ministry of Sport at the national team level.
