The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has a variety of landscapes, with the highlands being a popular destination among tourists who are interested in mountaineering and hiking due to the highlands' mild climate all year long.
The Kingdom established the Saudi Climbing and Hiking Federation in 2017, which is concerned with organizing social and scientific events, tourism activities, exploration adventures, and mountain sports.
The Saudi Climbing and Hiking Federation has identified suitable locations for mountaineering across several regions of the Kingdom, including the Olympic Crag at al-Shafa Center within Taif Governorate in Makkah, Neom Crag in Tabuk, Wadi al-Akhu Crag in Riyadh, al-Ula Crag in Medina, and three locations in Tanomah, Asir: Wall of Shadows Crag, al-Sharaf Crag and The Book Crag.
The Saudi Climbing and Hiking Federation, affiliated with the Ministry of Sports, joined the International Federation of Sport Climbing in March 2020. Its duties include organizing and developing activities related to mountain and rock climbing, in addition to competitive and non-competitive hiking.
