Yanbu Water Desalination Plant is located in Yanbu Governorate, in Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah Province, along the Red Sea Coast. It is one of the plants affiliated with the Saudi Water Authority. It serves residents by providing them with desalinated water.

System of Yanbu Water Desalination Plant

The first phase of operations began in Yanbu plants, and the systems for desalinated water transmission to Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah began in 1981. This was followed by the operation of the production system in 1998, with a daily capacity of 339,798 m of desalinated water. The second phase of operations began in 2000. It entailed the use of flash evaporation and reverse osmosis technologies. In 2012, the electrochemically mediated desalination unit was inaugurated. Within the scope of the third phase, the project for the manufacturing and supply of pipes for the system for desalinated water transmission to Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah was launched in 2015.

Mobile desalination units in Yanbu Plant

In 2018, the Saudi Water Authority worked on implementing the mobile desalination units project. The project was executed in its affiliated desalination plans in Yanbu Governorate. The project had a daily production capacity of up to thirty thousand m of fresh water. In 2020, the annual production of the Yanbu Plants Production System reached about 292,458,969 m of water, while the available production capacity amounted to 98.2 percent.

Projects of Yanbu Water Desalination Plant

The projects implemented by the Saudi Water Authority include executing the third phase of the system of Yanbu Power and Desalination Plant (energy set). It is a steam generation system with a daily production capacity of 550,000 m. It aims at increasing the production capacity of the system. The project also encompasses the fourth phase of the water transmission system from Yanbu generation plant to Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah, in addition to two pumping stations and reservoirs with a total capacity of 550,000 m.

The list of projects also encompasses the Yanbu Production System Replacement Project (2) with a design capacity of five hundred thousand m per day, the fourth phase of Yanbu-Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah Water Transmission System with a design capacity of 550,000 m per day, Yanbu Strategic Storage Project with a design capacity of 340,000 m per day, and the third phase of Yanbu Gas Supply Line Project.

Production volume of Yanbu Water Desalination Plant

In terms of the exported generated water, the statistics featured under the annual report of the Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC), currently known as the Saudi Water Authority, reveal that the volume of exported water within Yanbu-Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah Water Transmission System has amounted to around 246,519,039 m in 2020, recording an increase of about 3 percent compared to the preceding year. The percentage of water delivered to customers has been estimated at 100 percent.
