Where Is Shaybah Sanctuary Located?
Shaybah Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Ar-Rub' Al-Khali (Empty Quarter) desert, south of the Eastern Province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and covers an area of 637 km2. Ar-Rub' Al-Khali desert consists of dunes and sabkhas.
Shaybah Sanctuary is one of Saudi Aramco's voluntary community initiatives in the field of environmental sustainability. It aims to contribute to efforts to restore biodiversity in the region where the company operates. The fenced sanctuary, located near the company's facilities in the region, provides protection for dozens of plant and animal species.
Under the Saudi Aramco initiative, in its first phase, the number of Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx) in the sanctuary has reached 130, sand gazelles (Gazella marica) reached 120, and red-necked ostriches (Struthio camelus camelus) recorded four in the region.
