List of the Names of Hijr Ismail
Hijr Ismail is a crescent-shaped wall adjacent to the northern side of Al-Kaaba Al-Musharrafa within the Grand Mosque. It has two small doors on the eastern and western sides. Its length, measured from the center of its inner wall to the facing wall of Al-Kaaba, is approximately 8.46 m. The following is a list of Hijr Ismail names:
Hijr Ismail
This is the name by which it is commonly known. It was so-called because, according to narrations, Prophet Ibrahim, peace be upon him (PBUH), made it a shelter for Ismail, who used it for himself and his sheep. He covered it with a canopy made from Salvadora persica trees, which are widespread in the valleys of Makkah Al-Mukarramah.
Hufrat Ismail
This name refers to the fact that it was a pit before the foundations of Al-Kaaba Al-Musharrafa were raised and built.
Al-Hijr
Yaqut Al-Hamawi attributed this name to the fact that the Quraysh left out part of the original foundation of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) when rebuilding it, so they enclosed that area with a low wall to indicate that it was part of Al-Kaaba.
Jadr
This name is based on a narration about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), when a man asked him: "Have you seen Al-Hateem?," to which he replied, "It's not Al-Hateem. The people of Al-Jahiliyyah 'pre-Islam' era used to call it Al-Hatim, but it is actually Al-Jadr."
Al-Hateem
It refers to a location beneath Mizab Al-Kaaba, which is named as such because it is detached from Al-Kaaba and broken off. Some say it is called Al-Hateem because people raise their voices in prayer at this spot.
