Libraries Hackathon is a technical challenge organized by the Libraries Commission, in cooperation with the Small and Medium Enterprises General Authority (Monsha'at) and Elm Company. It was held in Riyadh from March 7 to 9, 2024, with the aim of developing and innovating technical solutions in the field of libraries. The hackathon targeted technical developers, innovators, entrepreneurs, and library specialists in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Libraries Hackathon Objectives

The Libraries Hackathon aims to achieve several goals, including strengthening relationships and building bridges with library specialists; providing and developing technical solutions to the challenges facing the library sector; raising awareness about the importance of libraries and their role in knowledge, science, and civilization; encouraging development and creativity; fostering the spirit of competition; and supporting entrepreneurs in the library sector.

The hackathon targets technical developers, innovators, entrepreneurs, and library specialists, by forming harmonious teams that create applications, platforms, and technical solutions that serve libraries and promote reading.

Libraries Hackathon Tracks

The Libraries Hackathon consists of three tracks, and participants can choose one of them. The first track, book recycling, focuses on developing innovative solutions to recycle and reuse books, supporting sustainability and reducing waste. This includes creating systems and programs that facilitate the exchange and recycling of books, as well as finding ways to repurpose books that are no longer suitable for reading. The second track aims at promoting reading habits by developing platforms and tools that encourage reading and improve reading behavior, including motivational and interactive applications that make reading enjoyable and an essential part of daily life for different age and cultural groups. The third track, digital transformation of libraries, focuses on strategies to digitize, archive, and manage libraries, improve access to digital resources, and make library resources and services more accessible and effective through digital media.

Libraries Hackathon Stages

The Libraries Hackathon consists of four stages: the first stage is registration, the second stage involves screening and acceptance, the third stage is the virtual gathering, and the fourth stage is the challenge.

Libraries Hackathon Awards

The Libraries Hackathon prizes total SAR300,000, divided among the top five winning teams, with the first-place team receiving SAR100,000, the second SAR80,000, the third SAR60,000, the fourth SAR40,000, and the fifth SAR20,000.

Libraries Hackathon Terms

The Libraries Hackathon has set a number of terms and conditions for participants. The team leader must obtain the approval of all team members, particularly regarding financial matters, and share it with them upon winning. Participation is open to all individuals and teams in Saudi Arabia, including citizens and residents, and the Arabic language must be used in project presentations. All contestants must pledge to abide by the hackathon’s terms and conditions, and the Libraries Commission reserves the right to disqualify any participant without providing reasons and without incurring any obligations or compensation of any kind.
