Climbing in Saudi Arabia remained an individual hobby until the establishment of the Saudi Climbing and Hiking Federation by the decision of the President of the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee in 2017. The Federation is responsible for developing sustainable climbing activities, both competitive and non-competitive. In 2020, the Federation became a member of the International Federation of Sport Climbing. The Federation is the official entity responsible for developing rock climbing and hiking in Saudi Arabia under the umbrella of the Ministry of Sport.

The Federation is responsible for all aspects of mountaineering. The Federation's mission is to build and develop local capabilities and skills in climbing, represent Saudi Arabia in international competitions, and host local and international competitions. The Federation is headquartered in Jeddah.
