Hala Bint Mazyad Al-Tuwaijri (born April 14, 1977), is the President of the Human Rights Commission in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, since 2022, with the rank of minister,and previously held the position of Secretary-General of the Family Affairs Council.

Education of Hala Al-Tuwaijri

Hala Al-Tuwaijri obtained a bachelor’s degree in English Literature in 1998 from King Saud University and earned a master’s degree in English Literature from the same university in 2004. She also obtained a doctorate from the same university in 2011.

The career path of Hala Al-Tuwaijri

Hala Al-Tuwaijri was appointed as a faculty member at King Saud University in Riyadh, and held the position of Assistant Professor of English Literature in the College of Arts, where she served as Vice Dean of the College from 2012 to 2023. In 2017, she was appointed Secretary-General of the Family Affairs Council until 2023.

 

On September 22, 2022, a Royal Decree was issued appointing Hala Al-Tuwaijri as President of the Human Rights Commission with the rank of minister, and she was also assigned the position of Chair of the Commission’s Board of Directors.

Hala Al-Tuwaijri has produced several publications, including: The Struggle for Self-Identity in Some Plays of Derek Walcott, a master’s thesis published in 2004; Wole Soyinka’s Drama: A Model for Cultural Representation, a doctoral thesis published in 2011; Cosmology and Politics in Wole Soyinka’s play “A Dance of the Forests”, published in 2012; Remaking the Novel: The Impact of Media and Social Networks on Printed Narrative: Innovation, Difference, and Disruption, published in 2013; and The Challenges of World Literature as an Academic Discipline, published in 2014.

Hala Al-Tuwaijri’s participation in conferences

Hala Al-Tuwaijri participated in several conferences inside and outside Saudi Arabia, including: the International Poetry Conference, held in the Emirate of Dubai in 2009; the conference “The Postcolonial City: Re-evaluating, Rebuilding, and Representing It”, held in Leeds in 2011; the First Interdisciplinary Conference on Understanding Play, held at Mansfield College, Oxford in 2012; the College of Arts conference on women, in Riyadh in 2011; the Second International Conference on Languages, Literature and Linguistics, held in Kuala Lumpur in 2012; the Literary Novel Conference, held at Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts in 2013; the Fourteenth International Conference on Literary Criticism and World Literature, held in Istanbul in 2014; the Tenth International Conference on Symbolism in Language and Literature, held in Tübingen, Germany in 2015; the First International Conference on the Humanities: Future Horizons, held at King Saud University in 2015; the International Conference on Teaching and Learning, at King Saud University in 2016; and the Winter Enrichment Programme, at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), in 2016.

Hala Al-Tuwaijri received the King Abdulaziz Medal, Second Class, in 2021.
