Abu Hadriya Well is an exploratory oil well in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Drilling began in 1939, 161 km northwest of Dhahran in the Eastern Province. The depth of the well reached three thousand m, which is twice the depth of Dammam No. Seven.

Reconstruction of Abu Hadriya Well

Saudi Aramco launched a project to reconstruct Abu Hadriya Well, in which it relied on an experienced and qualified Saudi workforce, as the Saudi crew entirely completed the infrastructure of this oil well, for the first time in the company’s history.

In December 2019, a Saudi work team, consisting of seventy-eight Saudi employees, completed all the required tasks for constructing the Abu Hadriya-131 oil well. This encompassed project management, quality assurance, and on-site implementation tasks like welding and installing measuring devices.

Through the project, Saudi Aramco sought to benefit from long-term agreements in managing projects to preserve production capacity in onshore areas and manage projects in submerged areas. This is to achieve the company’s project management commitment by contributing to the company’s localization efforts and finding new ways to cooperate with contractors to enhance the localization of the workforce.

National capacities in Abu Hadriya

The completion of the reconstruction project for Abu Hadriya Well represents a significant milestone for Saudi Aramco's project management. Working on oil well infrastructure projects is a critical objective due to the urgent need to support Saudi Aramco's commitment to maintaining sufficient production capacity to meet global energy market demand. Furthermore, it contributes to enhancing the capabilities of national companies that support the economy.

This project began with project management for production energy conservation in onshore areas and the implementing contractor developing a list of the required diversity within the work team, including engineers, foremen, pipefitters, and electricians.

The companies and work crews completed the project in accordance with the quality and safety requirements set by Saudi Aramco, as well as the requirements outlined in the quality index for oil well infrastructure projects in the Kingdom.

Quality requirements in Abu Hadriya project

Strict quality checks were carried out during the work to ensure that the project met requirements. For example, quality assurance engineers utilize X-rays to inspect the welding between tubes, aiming to eliminate any margin of error. This demands highly skilled craftsmen and engineers who have undergone extensive theoretical and practical training, along with testing based on scientific methods and procedures, ensuring the precision and reliability of their work.

The Saudi work team not only met the quality requirements but also completed the work safely and ahead of schedule. The project team members underwent additional intensive preparations to ensure quality, which included a six-month training program supervised by certified employees. Additionally, they were required to obtain accreditation in their field of specialization from the inspection department at Saudi Aramco.
