Al-Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University (IMSIU), one of twenty-nine public universities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is located in the capital city, Riyadh, approximately twenty km from King Khalid International Airport. The university was established in 1953 when the College of Sharia Sciences, now known as the College of Sharia, was opened. This college served as the nucleus of the university, and after that, several colleges and scientific institutes were subsequently established, leading the university to its current shape in 1974.

IMSIU campus

IMSIU is one of the eight public universities in Riyadh Region. Its campus occupies an area of 7,029,034 m2, including the University City for Male Students with an area of 2,769,724 m2, almost 39 percent of the total campus area, and King Abdullah City for Female Students with an area of 1,701,885 m2, approximately 24 percent of the total area. The remaining area encompasses housing for faculty members, student accommodation, and the sports area. The university includes the College of Sharia and Islamic Studies (both male and female sections) in al-Ahsa in the Eastern Province.

IMSIU colleges

The university includes fourteen colleges, three higher institutes, and five institutes outside the Kingdom. Additionally, there are seventy scientific institutes spread across the Kingdom and an institute for teaching Arabic to non-native speakers in the capital, Riyadh.

In 2020, a decision was issued to integrate the scientific institutes into the Ministry of Education to align university specializations with post-secondary education.

Statistics of IMSIU

The university provides 176 academic programs, from diplomas to Ph.D. programs. According to the latest official statistics, the total number of diploma students reached 7,175, from both genders, while the number of bachelor's students is 81,261. The number of master's students is 3,416, in addition to 2,644 Ph.D. students. The total number of faculty members is 3,823, according to the latest official statistics on the university's website in July 2023.
