The university was established as the University of Dammam in 2009. It is among four universities established simultaneously: Shaqra University in Shaqra Governorate, Prince Sattam Bin Abdulaziz University in al-Kharj Governorate, and Majmaah University in al-Majmaah Governorate.

It retained the name University of Dammam until the year 2016 when the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud approved the change of its name. It was renamed Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University in honor of the last ruler of the Second Saudi State and the father of the Founder King Abdulaziz Bin Abdulrahman Al Saud, as a tribute to him and in memory of his legacy. Its origins can be traced back to a branch of King Faisal University, established in 1975.
