Saudi Flag Day is a day dedicated to the flag. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia celebrates its flag on March 11 of each year. This stems from the value of the national flag, which has extended throughout the history of the Saudi state since its founding in 1727. This day was approved by a Royal Order issued by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, on March 1, 2023.

King Abdulaziz Bin Abdulrahman Al Saud approved the Saudi flag in its current form on March 11, 1937.

Significance of the Saudi flag

The Saudi flag, with the Shahada placed in its the middle, symbolizes the message of peace and Islam upon which the Kingdom was founded. As for the sword, it symbolizes strength, dignity, wisdom, and status. It bears witness to the unification campaigns undertaken by the Saudi state, thus rendering the flag for Saudis a majestic emblem that is never flown at half-mast. It represents the essence of the state, its strength, and sovereignty, and serves as a symbol of cohesion, coalition, and national unity.

History of the Saudi flag

In 1926, King Abdulaziz ordered the formation of the Founding Body, and entrusted it with forming the shape of the flag as part of its duties. In 1937, King Abdulaziz issued his approval on the resolution of the Shura Council regarding the Law of the Flag of the Kingdom and its measurements, stipulating that the flag should be 150 cm long and one hundred cm wide.

In 1937, the Shura Council issued a decision to allocate the flag of His Majesty the King, the flag of the Crown Prince, the flag of the Armed Forces and Domestic Flights, the royal Saudi naval flag, and the commercial maritime flag. In 1952, the Shura Council issued a resolution regarding flag sizes and amendments based on the information received from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Saudi flag during the era of kings

Interest in the Saudi flag persisted during the reign of the kings, sons of King Abdulaziz, and the Law of the Flag of the Kingdom was issued during the reign of King Faisal Bin Abdulaziz in 1973, detailing the specifications of the Kingdom’s flag. The law also included the creation of a special flag for the king, with the addition of the golden palm emblem to the right of the flag. The Implementing Regulations of the Law of the Flag were issued in 1978.

In 1986, the Minister of Interior issued a resolution regarding the standard specifications approved by the Saudi Arabian Organization for Standardization and Metrology for the national flag. In 1992, the Basic Law of Governance stipulated that the Saudi flag is green in color, with its width equal to two-thirds of its length. It bears the Shahada (There is no God but Allah) in the middle, with an unsheathed sword underneath it, and it should never be lowered at half-mast.
