The Italian Senna Shrub (Senna italica, Caesalpiniaceae) is a plant native to the Arabian Peninsula and subtropical environments. It is a locally grown plant in Riyadh, the capital of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and belongs to the Caesalpiniaceae family. It is characterized by its fast growth and semi-evergreen leaves, requiring minimal maintenance.

Description of the Italian Senna shrub

The Italian Senna shrub grows to a height ranging between 0.5 m and 0.6 m, with a horizontal spread of three to six m. It has thin, woody branches and is widely found in desert environments. Its leaves are compound, consisting of inverted oval to elongated leaflets, bluish-green in color, and semi-evergreen. The flowers are yellow with purple-striped petals, reaching two cm in length. The plant blooms throughout the year, especially at the beginning of summer, from June to the end of July. Its fruits are long, curved, and prominently visible on the plant.

The Italian Senna shrub has a remarkable ability to adapt to different environments, making it suitable for cultivation in various locations, though it is most commonly found in desert areas. It can also grow among rocks and in gravelly regions. The plant requires minimal irrigation, exhibits fast growth, and has high drought resistance. It can tolerate low temperatures down to six degrees below zero. Additionally, it is attractive to bees, has medicinal properties, and can be cultivated either by direct seeding or by planting seeds and later transplanting seedlings.
