The Pittosporum Tree (Pittosporum tobira, Pittosporaceae)is a fruit-bearing, evergreen tree that grows relatively fast. It belongs to the Pittosporaceae family and can reach a height of approximately five m with a spread of about four m. Its native habitat is East Asia, including China, Korea, and Japan. It is also cultivated in Riyadh, the capital of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Cultivation and growth of Pittosporum tree

The Pittosporum tree propagates through cuttings, seed planting, and transplanting its seedlings. It thrives in a subtropical climate, such as the Mediterranean climate, as it prefers high-humidity environments. However, it is sensitive to drought and stagnant water, requiring moderate irrigation with low-salinity water. Its fallen fruits can stain nearby pathways, but aside from that, Pittosporum is a moderately low-maintenance, frost-resistant plant. It requires occasional light pruning to encourage dense branching. The tree remains evergreen throughout the year and blooms in spring, from March to May.

Description of the Pittosporum tree

The Pittosporum tree has glossy green, oval-shaped leaves with convex edges. Its fragrant, pale yellowish-white flowers attract pollinators. Occasionally, the plant may show signs of sun scorch, leading to variegation in its leaves.

Uses of the Pittosporum tree

Due to its ability to be shaped through pruning, the Pittosporum tree is suitable as a flowering plant screen in private gardens and parks. It can also be used as a shade plant. Its fragrant flowers attract bees and birds.
