King Abdulaziz University Hospital is a public university hospital and the largest academic medical center in the western region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Located within the campus of King Abdulaziz University, it is one of the leading hospitals in Jeddah Governorate. Its modern main building was inaugurated in 1996 during the reign of King Fahd Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and was officially opened by King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud when he was Crown Prince.

Establishment of King Abdulaziz University Hospital

King Abdulaziz University Hospital began operations as a healthcare center with a capacity of two hundred beds in late 1976, during the reign of King Khalid Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. Its maximum capacity reached 1,067 beds, with more than one hundred beds allocated for critical care and twenty-three rooms for surgical operations. The hospital also contributes to educational and awareness activities, leveraging the expertise of specialists.

The hospital is located next to the University Dental Hospital, the College of Medicine, and the College of Pharmacy. It includes the main lecture hall, the emergency department on its northern side, and a helipad on its rooftop, with designated parking spaces surrounding the buildings for patients, visitors, and students.

The hospital includes specialties such as obstetrics and gynecology, internal medicine, head and neck surgery, ENT, day care, emergency medicine, pediatric emergency, orthopedic surgery, general surgery, family medicine, urology, general pediatrics, epilepsy treatment unit, hematology, ophthalmic surgery, and home healthcare.

Additionally, the hospital features supporting departments, including pharmacy, radiology, intensive care, medical social services, physical therapy, anesthesiology, the sleep medicine and research center, the prosthetics department, the nutrition and dietetics department, specialized laboratories, the blood bank, nursing, the domestic violence protection committee, and the medical education unit.

Achievements of King Abdulaziz University Hospital

King Abdulaziz University Hospital has achieved several milestones in international accreditations, including the Canadian Accreditation, the Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation, the Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies (AABB) accreditation, and the College of American Pathologists (CAP) accreditation.

In 2007, the hospital laboratories received recognition from the American Association of Blood Banks, specifically in the field of clinical chemical analysis.

In 2024, the hospital received the prestigious DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses, which is awarded to distinguished sectors in recognition of their contributions to alleviating patient suffering and providing exceptional care. This award is an international program that honors outstanding nurses and celebrates the exceptional care, professional skill, and compassion they demonstrate toward patients and their families.
