Al-Tariq Art is a form of traditional singing known in the southern provinces of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is practiced in the outskirts and governorates of Aseer Province, as-Sarah, and Tihama, and has also spread to al-Bahah Province. It is also performed in the Sultanate of Oman.

Al-Tariq art and rhetorical devices

Al-Tariq art is performed solo, and its singing relies on rhetorical devices, such as Saj' (rhymed prose), pun, and double entendre. Its melodies and themes are filled with melancholy and are typically performed to pass the time during travels, long journeys, evening gatherings, and private sessions. Al-Tariq singing nights often attract young people, as it is a form of relaxation.

Performance of al-Tariq art

Al-Tariq art is performed with a raised voice, similar to the Hejazi Mawwal, and aligns with the Majroor style from Taif in terms of vocal harmony and consistency. Although most traditional arts and group dances in the south are accompanied by weapons and displays of strength with rifles, swords, and Jambiya (daggers) to evoke enthusiasm and express bravery, al-Tariq art has moved away from loud rhythms. It relies instead on the sweetness of the voice and poetic selections deeply rooted in local culture.
