
Makkah Literary Club, also known as the Makkah Cultural and Literary Club, is a literary and cultural institution in Makkah al-Mukarramah City, west of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is dedicated to promoting knowledge, culture, and literature. The club was established in 1975 and inaugurated in 1978 under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture.
Establishment of Makkah Literary Club
Makkah Literary Club was founded in response to the aspirations of writers and intellectuals in Makkah al-Mukarramah, who used to gather at the Grand Mosque after prayers and in evening sessions known as 'al-Mirkaz.' The founding committee comprised twenty-five writers and intellectuals from citizens of Makkah al-Mukarramah.
The first board of directors of the club was elected, with Ibrahim Amin Fouda serving as the first chairman and Hussein Arab as vice chairman. Members included Ahmad al-Sibai, Rashid al-Rajeh, Ahmed Mohammed Jamal, Mahmoud Hassan Zaini, and Abdulaziz Khoja.
In 2011, women joined the board for the first time following the first elections held across literary clubs.
The works of Makkah Literary Club
Makkah Literary Club organizes literary lectures and scientific symposia, inviting renowned writers, poets, intellectuals, and renowned scholars to attend. Additionally, the club publishes an annual magazine and periodic newsletters related to its events and has established a library that encompasses various branches of cultural and literary knowledge.
The club coordinates and organizes courses and televised and radio discussions, encourages literary and scientific research, and provides scientific and cultural films. Its initiatives include training young talents in producing literary plays and fostering collaborations with other cultural clubs and scientific institutions within and outside Saudi Arabia. Additionally, it facilitates the exchange of activities and perspectives, supports and assists writers and emerging talents in publishing and distributing their works, and oversees the publication and printing of the club’s literary and scientific productions.
The activities of Makkah Literary Club
Makkah Literary Club engages in various activities, including public events such as honoring intellectual and literary figures and guests of Makkah al-Mukarramah. It also organizes cultural and literary evenings, symposia, and lectures.
The club organizes annual symposia on literary and intellectual topics, including children's culture, creative intercultural exchange, youth between the center and the margins, and cultural discourse. It has also offered numerous courses to develop young talents in Arabic calligraphy, visual arts, and theater. Additionally, it has contributed to organizing art and book exhibitions and has supported theatrical activities through performances, festivals, and training programs. The club also releases publications in multiple fields, including arts, literature, and sciences.
