The Ancient Glass Bottle is made of marbled glass, featuring a narrow, elongated neck that ends with a slightly extended rim, thickened on its surface with a smooth outward flow, and a flat circular base. It was used for storing liquids. The bottle was discovered in the historical area of al-Rabadha, located approximately two hundred km east of al-Madinah al-Munawwarah, on the edge of the western Hejaz Mountains in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

History of the glass bottle

The glass bottle dates back to the Abbasid era during the Islamic period. Its discovery is part of the archaeological survey and excavation efforts carried out by the antiquities and museums sector in Saudi Arabia over the past years. It is one of the finds made by Saudi archaeologists and scientific missions, which continue to uncover the treasures of the successive civilizations that inhabited the region.

The bottle is preserved at the Saudi National Museum in Riyadh and is among the artistic artifacts and archaeological discoveries from Saudi Arabia selected for the Saudi Archeological Masterpieces Through the Ages Exhibition. It is registered under the number 2293.

Significance of the glass bottle

The bottle has a height of 11.5 cm, a base diameter of 5.2 cm, and a body diameter of 8.5 cm. It reflects the artistic accumulation and high level of craftsmanship of the Muslim artisan. It was shaped using the free-blowing technique, forming a spherical body resting on a flat base and smoothly transitioning into a short neck with a flat circular rim, defining the opening of the bottle.
