1952

During the reign of the Founding King Abdulaziz Bin Abdulrahman Al Saud, a resolution was issued to establish a department responsible for sports under the Ministry of Interior. The establishment of this department was an administrative and institutional breakthrough, with its infrastructure, human cadres, and representation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in local, regional, and international competitions.

1954

A department entitled the Department of Physical and Social Education was established. The department was responsible for sports and social activities in schools and subsequently integrating physical education within school curricula.

1955

Sports and social development in schools comprises holding official games. These games are organized by the educational regions in the Kingdom between their schools. They involve various games such as football, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, and athletics, such as cycling, then introduced for the first time in the history of sports activity.

1960

Youth welfare tasks were assigned to the Ministry of Knowledge (currently known as the Ministry of Education).

1962

Youth welfare tasks in the private sector were assigned to the Youth Welfare Department at the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (currently known as the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development).

1974

The resolution of the Council of Ministers under which youth welfare became an independent agency under the name "General Presidency of Youth Welfare" was issued. The presidency operated under the General Presidency of the Saudi Arabian International Committee, established in 1964.

2016

A Royal Order was issued for the amendment of the name of the General Presidency of Youth Welfare to the General Sports Authority.

2020

A Royal Order was issued to transform the "General Sports Authority" into the "Ministry of Sport." Its establishment coincided with the founding of the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Investment.
