Timeline of Riyadh City Public Bus Transport Network

Riyadh Bus Network integrates with Riyadh Metro as part of the King Abdulaziz Project for Riyadh Public Transport. The buses operate through a set of routes covering the city’s main streets and several secondary streets, connecting the capital's districts with commercial centers. The network was developed in several phases.

October 20, 2009

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, while serving as Chairman of the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC), submitted a document to King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud that provides a plan for the development of public transport in Riyadh City. The plan included establishing the backbone of the public transport system through an electric train, and implementing a bus network covering the entire Riyadh City, integrated with the electric train services, with a total length of 708 km, including local networks within residential neighborhoods.

April 23, 2012

The Council of Ministers approved the execution of the public transport project in Riyadh City (train and buses), with its different phases according to the studies by the RCRC in collaboration with relevant authorities.

March 18, 2023

The first phase of Riyadh Bus was launched, featuring 340 buses serving passengers through 633 stations and stops, across fifteen routes.

June 19, 2023

The second phase of Riyadh Bus was launched, adding nine new routes, extending Route Eleven (dedicated bus lanes), and introducing 223 additional buses serving passengers in various neighborhoods through five hundred new stations and stops.

August 19, 2023

The third phase of Riyadh Bus was launched, adding Route Thirteen to the dedicated bus lane network along Khalid Bin al-Waleed Road, joining the already established dedicated bus lane through Route Eleven on King Abdulaziz Road and Salahuddin al-Ayyubi Road.

October 19, 2023

The fourth phase of Riyadh Bus was launched, introducing seven new routes. Route 932 starts from al-Rabi Neighborhood and stops at al-Yasmeen Station, while Route 933 starts from al-Nuzha Neighborhood and stops at al-Taawun Station. Route 942 starts from al-Khaleej Neighborhood and stops at ar-Rawdah Station. Route 944 runs between al-Andalus Station and al-Khaleej Station. Additionally, Route 945 starts from al-Khaleej Neighborhood and heads to an-Nahdah Station, while Route 947 starts from as-Shuhada Station to al-Muanisiyah Station. Lastly, Route 948 starts from al-Yarmouk Neighborhood, stopping at al-Yarmouk Station.

December 19, 2023

The main network of Riyadh Bus was completed, with a total of fifty-four routes, served by 679 buses, through 2,145 stations and stops.
