The Purple Saturday Initiative is an annual event held on the last Saturday of July every year. It was launched by the Authority of People with Disability in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 2021, aiming to enhance the quality of life for people with disability and encourage the business sector to offer commercial discounts, promotions, and benefits to this group.
Objectives of the Purple Saturday Initiative
The Purple Saturday Initiative seeks to achieve a set of objectives, including involving the business sector in supporting people with disability, offering what can be provided in celebration of them on this day, creating a genuine partnership between the sector and the Authority of People with Disability, and contributing to enhancing the quality of life for people with disability.
Participation begins with online registration through the initiative's website, where participating entities register their information and present their offers on July 29. Additionally, they participate in the hashtag #Purple_Saturday. The Authority of People with Disability coordinated with the Ministry of Commerce not to count participation with offers as part of the annual balance of days for promotions and discounts.

The initiative chose purple as its logo, in line with the international symbol used to represent various disabilities. The idea came to meet the needs of people with disability for shopping and purchasing various daily supplies and other needs, to increase stores' awareness of the purchasing power of these people, and to contribute to improving the customer experience in those companies and stores by providing services to them.
The month of July was selected because global awareness days related to disability are spread throughout the year, while July lacks activities and initiatives. That is why, it was identified to highlight this initiative and the issue of disability without distraction by other occasions.
Authority of People with Disability
The Authority of People with Disability was established by a Council of Ministers resolution in 2018. It is an official umbrella encompassing everything related to people with disability in the Kingdom. The authority was established to empower people with disability, ensure they obtain all their rights, grant them the opportunity to enhance their role and position in society as effective and active individuals, work on developing the services provided to them, and contribute to solving the obstacles and problems they may face. Additionally, it aims to launch programs, initiatives, and projects that serve this group of citizens.
The authority aims to enhance the services provided by entities to persons with disability, enabling them to obtain care and rehabilitation, and increasing the level of prevention by taking necessary measures through coordination with relevant entities.
