Green Darah Initiative (GDI) was launched by the King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives (Darah) in Riyadh City on May 23, 2021, as part of the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud's initiatives: "Saudi Green" and "Middle East Green." GDI aims to achieve its goals through practical measures that have been implemented.

GDI Goals

Green Darah Initiative seeks to provide scientific, historical, and knowledge content that highlights its significance on national, regional, and global levels. As part of GDI, a seminar was organized under the title "Green Archives and Research Centers in the Arab World: Present and Future Aspirations". GDI also adopted concepts and strategies for environmental protection within Darah.

GDI commits to practices and activities that ensure environmental stewardship, including digital transformation, enhancing green infrastructure, reducing carbon emissions by adopting a supply of reusable materials, and offering remote services to beneficiaries. Darah also leveraged natural light sources and expanded the use of advanced services and technologies for both its staff and beneficiaries to preserve the environment and reduce paper waste.

GDI initiatives and services

Darah activated services aligned with the GDI goals, including: Cloud services, remote services, paperless services (SEO), electronic reference services, and e-store services. Additionally, Darah conducted awareness campaigns about environmental stewardship and the importance of safeguarding natural resources through its media and digital platforms. It also utilized its databases targeting staff and beneficiaries, emphasizing the national and humanitarian responsibility of each individual in addressing this critical issue.

"Saudi Green" Initiative

Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, announced the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative on March 27, 2021, reflecting the commitment of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to protecting nature and addressing environmental challenges in the region. These initiatives build on the efforts undertaken during the Kingdom's presidency of the G20 last year.

Through the "Saudi Green Initiative," the Kingdom aims to increase vegetation cover, combat pollution and land degradation, and preserve marine and coastal ecosystems. This will be achieved by rehabilitating forty million ha of land, planting ten billion trees, and expanding green spaces twelvefold.

The first set of landmark initiatives in the Kingdom has been launched, serving as a roadmap for environmental protection and mitigation of the challenges of climate change. These initiatives represent investments exceeding SAR700 billion, contributing to green economic growth, creating quality jobs, and offering significant investment opportunities for the private sector as part of Saudi Vision 2030.
