Souk Okaz is located in Taif Governorate, Makkah al-Mukarramah Province, west of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It was held on the location of the historical market that was a symbol of pre-Islamic Arab poetry, literature, and culture. It was revived by the Kingdom in 2007, when Souk Okaz Annual Festival was founded to revive the market, keep abreast with the time, and preserve its historical value.
Souk Okaz assumed a significant economic and cultural role in the lives of pre-Islamic and early Islamic Arabs. Its location was an intersection of trade routes and a gathering location for people during the Hajj season. People used to showcase their goods, poetry, and literary works. The market witnessed some sports events, such as horseback riding. Hence, gatherings at the market became popular among Arabs.
The revival of Souk Okaz falls within the Kingdom's interest in instilling a cultural ambiance, engaging all community segments, and fostering their connection with their heritage.
