The College of Sharia in Makkah al-Mukarramah is the first university educational establishment in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In 1949, the Founding King Abdulaziz Bin Abdulrahman Al Saud ordered its establishment, thus becoming the first university and nucleus for Umm al-Qura University.

Umm al-Qura University has three campuses in Makkah al-Mukarramah, the first being in al-Aziziah Neighborhood. It encompasses the general administration and supporting deanships. It also houses some colleges, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Institute for Hajj and Umrah Research, the College of Community Service, and the Scientific Research Institute. The second campus is located in al-Zaher Neighborhood. It includes the female section of the Deanship of University Studies for female students, its colleges, and facilities. The third campus is located in al-Abdeyah Neighborhood. It houses the College of Sharia and Islamic Studies and the College of Engineering and Islamic Architecture.

Umm al-Qura University houses thirty colleges, four institutes, and 119 departments. The number of its faculty members amounts to approximately 4,737, while the number of the university's admitted students is around 94,843 male and female students, according to the statistics published on the university's website.
