The Saudi Geological Survey established the Zamzam Studies and Research Center to oversee the extraction and sterilization of Zamzam water, ensuring its preservation and monitoring its quantity and quality. This is achieved through various mandates and programs aimed at observing, monitoring, and identifying its sources, ensuring sustainability, and balancing supply and demand in response to the increasing demand for Zamzam water. These mandates include:

Supervising all stages of Zamzam water extraction, sterilization, storage, and preservation through a monitoring program for water quantity and quality, as well as filtration, sterilization, and storage operations in both Makkah al-Mukarramah and al-Madinah al-Munawwarah.

Developing and implementing a pumping and operation program to determine the appropriate and safe monthly and annual extraction quantities from the well, based on advanced hydrogeological methods. This includes annually updating the quantities and monitoring the well's extraction to align with the proposed amounts.

Identifying and evaluating urban and environmental uses to mitigate their impact on disrupting the balance within the Ibrahim Valley basin and the protection zone through a continuous monitoring program.

Conducting technical studies, providing consultancy for government and private sector projects, and reviewing, evaluating, and approving studies from relevant entities to ensure the sustainability of water sources feeding the Zamzam Well.

Participating in the activities of the Security Committee to monitor the quality of water being pumped through the public network in Makkah al-Mukarramah and the holy sites, analyzing natural and human-induced geological risks, and proposing optimal solutions to mitigate them.

Operating a program to monitor deep foundations and rock cuttings in the Ibrahim Valley basin and the protection zone.

Producing maps of foundation levels, foundation structures for rocky areas, soil, and protection and recharge zones for the groundwater reservoir.

Studying climate data through the center's four climate stations to determine the contribution of rainfall to the groundwater reserves of the Zamzam Well.
