Maqam Ibrahim is the ancient stone upon which Prophet Ibrahim, peace be upon him (PBUH), stood during the construction of al-Kaaba al-Musharrafa in Makkah al-Mukarramah. The stone has undergone several developments and improvements over time, including:
- In 777, the Maqam was adorned with a gold coating for the first time by the Abbasid Caliph al-Mahdi.
- In 851, the Maqam was gilded for the second time by al-Mutawakkil ala Allah.
- In 865, it was again gilded during the caliphate of al-Mutawakkil. In 870 , it was gilded by the governor of Makkah, Ali Bin al-Hasan al-Abbasi.
- In 1495, the dome of the Maqam was renewed, as well as in 1509, 1593, 1639, 1661, 1688, 1691, and 1721.
- In 1967 , the enclosure of Maqam Ibrahim was removed and replaced with a crystal cover during the expansion in the era of King Faisal Bin Abdulaziz.
- In 1996, several renovations were undertaken during the era of King Fahd Bin Abdulaziz, including the addition of an inner gold-plated mesh to the Maqam, replacing its metal structure with one made of high-quality copper, and altering the concrete base to white Carrara marble adorned with green granite. This adjustment was designed to harmonize with the marble of al-Hijr, giving it a streamlined appearance instead of its previous polygonal shape.
