Zamzam Well is thirty m deep. It features a built part whose depth is estimated at 12.80 m and another part drilling in the mountain's rock over a distance of 17.20 m. Its diameter varies between 1.5 and 2.5 m.
Kings of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia took care of Zamzam Well throughout various eras. They were keen on its improvement and development since the reign of the Founding King Abdulaziz Bin Abdulrahman Al Saud. During his reign, buckets were used for extracting water from the well until he ordered the installation of a pump in 1954. It would pump water to upper tanks, where each tank was equipped with twelve taps. These tanks were used in addition to buckets.
The Saudi government executed the first expansion in 1958. The expansion featured a distinguished design for Zamzam well. It removed obstacles that previously hindered Tawaf performers and placed the well underground. Hence, the building ceiling became at the same surface as the Mataf area. The well was surrounded by a cement wall covered with marble. The Zamzam Water Administration in the Grand Mosque supervises the well and ensures the provision of both chilled and unchilled Zamzam water in dispensers. It ensures their cleanliness and provides plastic glasses. It also washes drinking bays and metal glasses and monitors the temperature of drinking bays.
