Saudi Space Agency (SSA) is a government agency involved in all matters concerning the advancement and growth of the space industry within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is directly linked to the Prime Minister. Originally established as the Saudi Space Commission by a Royal Order issued on December 27, 2018, it was subsequently transformed into an agency following a resolution by the Council of Ministers issued on June 13, 2023. SSA's headquarters is located in the capital, Riyadh. Its board of directors is chaired by the Minister of Communications and Information Technology.

SSA's mandate

SSA is responsible for planning and developing space-related policies and programs, organizing and overseeing all matters related to satellites, global navigation systems, spacecraft, space exploration missions, and the infrastructure of the space sector. SSA also aims to enhance space security by monitoring space risks, fostering the development and support of domestic talent in the field of space science, collaborating with government entities and international counterparts, representing the Kingdom in international forums, and coordinating space science and exploration missions.

SSA objectives

SSA has established several objectives in space science, encompassing the implementation, development, and localization of space science and technology, fostering the peaceful utilization of space industries and technologies, facilitating the adoption of the best global applications and practices within the domains of satellites and exploratory missions, bolstering the Kingdom's standing as a prominent regional and international hub in the field of space science and technology, and embracing expertise and knowledge pertaining to scientific and applied space research for civilian purposes.

SSA programs

The then-commission launched its first program in 2020. The Space Generations Program aims to develop human capital and Saudi competencies in the space sector. In 2021, the SSA launched the Space 101 training program in collaboration with Airbus Defence and Space. This program specializes in space technologies and aims to elevate the educational and practical knowledge in the space sector for individuals who are interested in and eager to learn about space science. Another program is the launch of Introduction to Space Applications on February 27, 2022. It is a training program designed for postgraduates and professionals working in the aviation and space sector. It emphasizes various aspects of space systems, space missions and applications, the space sector ecosystem, meteorological systems, launch, and operations, and provides an introduction to space applications.

SSA also launched the Saudi Astronauts Program in 2022 to prepare proficient Saudi individuals for both extended and brief journeys into space, as well as involvement in scientific experiments, global research, and forthcoming space missions.
