The Saudi Conventions and Exhibitions General Authority is the entity responsible for developing the exhibition and convention sector industry, with all its elements, foundations, and capabilities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This includes working to regulate, develop, and enhance the sector's role in the national economy, and overcoming obstacles to its growth, according to best international practices. It was established on December 27, 2018, along with two other bodies created by Royal Orders on the same day: the Saudi Space Commission and the Local Content and Government Procurement Authority. The Saudi Conventions and Exhibitions General Authority has a public legal personality, and financial and administrative independence, and is organizationally affiliated to the Prime Minister. Its staff are subject to the Labor Law and the Social Insurance Law.

The authority manages its operations from its main headquarters in the capital, Riyadh, and has a board of directors which serves as the dominant authority over the management of the authority's affairs and the conduct of its business. The board makes all decisions necessary to achieve its objectives and is chaired by Fahd al-Rasheed.

Mandates of the Chief Executive Officer of the Saudi Conventions and Exhibitions General Authority

The Saudi Conventions and Exhibitions General Authority has a Chief Executive Officer who is appointed and removed by a decision from the Board of Directors. The CEO is responsible for managing the affairs of the authority. Key mandates include overseeing the workflow within the authority through approved regulations, plans, and programs; representing the authority in judicial matters and before government bodies, institutions, and other related organizations, both inside and outside the Kingdom; and signing agreements and contracts after receiving approval from the board.

According to the regulatory arrangements, the Saudi Conventions and Exhibitions General Authority carries out several tasks, which include: developing plans, policies, and programs related to the exhibitions and conventions sector; issuing the necessary approvals for government entities to organize exhibitions and conventions; monitoring all activities within the sector; and coordinating with related entities regarding the promotion of investment in the exhibitions and conventions sector, as well as showcasing the Kingdom as an attractive destination for hosting exhibitions and conventions.

Additionally, the Saudi Conventions and Exhibitions General Authority works on qualifying, training, and developing national cadres, and attracting international exhibitions and conventions. It also focuses on developing and initiating local exhibitions and conventions, creating ones that represent the Saudi identity, providing technical support to government entities when organizing conventions and exhibitions abroad. The authority cooperates with representative bodies and government agencies overseas, participates in organizations and associations within its field of expertise, represents the Kingdom at international forums related to its specialization, and conducts specialized research and studies in the exhibitions and conventions sector.

Contributions of the Saudi Conventions and Exhibitions General Authority

The authority works on attracting international exhibitions and conventions, developing and supporting local exhibitions and conventions, and creating new ones that reflect the identity of the Kingdom. It provides technical support to government entities when they organize exhibitions and conventions abroad. Additionally, it prepares research and studies related to the exhibitions and conventions sector and represents the Kingdom in international forums relevant to its expertise.
