What Are the Dress Protocols for Official Events in Saudi Arabia?
In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the dress code for attendees at official events is often specified on invitation cards, which typically require wearing the national Saudi attire. If the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques or the Crown Prince is attending the event, the color of the Mishlah (cloak) for the guests is also specified.
Anyone wearing the Mishlah must follow specific protocols, including refraining from crossing one leg over the other or extending the legs while seated. The right hand should be placed inside the right sleeve of the Mishlah and kept free for greeting and handshakes, while the left hand remains inside, holding the edges of the Mishlah when moving or walking.
The Thobe should appear clean and pressed. If a special pin or brooch is provided for the occasion, it should be placed on the edge of the Mishlah's gold embroidery on the left side of the chest. The shoes should be black or match the color of the Mishlah. For women, it is preferred to wear the Abaya at official events, with a modest appearance, avoiding excessive accessories or facial makeup.
