The Emirate of Aseer Province is one of the emirates of the thirteen provinces of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is organizationally affiliated with the Ministry of Interior. Its responsibilities include coordination and collaboration with government entities during planning stages to provide all services for citizens and residents.

Establishment and governors of the Emirate of Aseer Province

The Emirate of Aseer Province was established after the unification of the Kingdom. It conducts its business from its headquarters in the city of Abha (southwest of the Kingdom) on Imam Mohammad Bin Saud Road. It adopts the visual identity of the Ministry of Interior as its logo.

Each emirate has a governor appointed by a Royal Decree at the rank of a Minister. In 2018, a decision was issued to appoint Prince Turki Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz as the Governor of Aseer Province. In 2023, another Royal Decree was issued appointing Prince Khalid Bin Sattam Bin Saud Bin Abdulaziz as the Deputy Governor of the Aseer Region with the rank of Excellency.

Governorates affiliated with the Emirate of Aseer Province

The emirate of the province oversees nineteen governorates. According to the Law of Provinces issued in 1992, amended by a Royal Decree in 1994, each emirate consists of several governorates, divided into two categories: (A) and (B), in addition to several centers. This division took into consideration the residential, geographical, and security conditions, transportation routes, environmental conditions, and the historical status of each governorate.
Aseer Province, which covers an area of over eighty thousand km, includes the city of Abha as the seat of the emirate, along with six of which are Category (A) governorates. They are: Khamis Mushayt, Bishah, Mahayil, al-Namas, Tathleeth, and Dhahran al-Janub. It also includes twelve Category (B) provinces. They are: Sarat Abidah, Rijal Alma, Balqarn, Ahad Rufaydah, Tanumah, Bariq, al-Majaridah, Tarib, al-Birk, al-Harajah, al-Amwah, and al-Farshah. Altogether, they comprise approximately 131 centers.

Emirate of Aseer Province tasks

The Law of Provinces unified administrative functions, units, and designations, and defined the hierarchy of officials across emirates, governorates, and centers, along with their respective powers, as follows: The Deputy Governor of the Province in an excellent rank, Undersecretary of the emirate in the fourteenth rank or higher, Mayor (A) in the fourteenth rank, Deputy Mayor (A) and Mayor (B) in the twelfth rank, Head of Center (A) in the eighth rank, and Head of Center (B) in the fifth rank.
The main tasks of the Emirate of Aseer Province encompass coordinating and collaborating with government entities during planning stages to ensure all services are provided to both citizens and residents. This comes in addition to receiving their complaints, looking into their concerns, striving to meet their demands, and resolving their issues. The emirate also focuses on maintaining security, overseeing the delivery of justice within the province, ensuring the efficacy and efficiency of services provided to the province's inhabitants, and working to enhance and develop services.

Population of Aseer province

Aseer Province is one of seven provinces in the Kingdom with a population exceeding one million people. The other provinces are: Riyadh, Makkah al-Mukarramah, al-Madinah al-Munawwarah, the Eastern Province, Jazan, and Qassim. Moreover, the population of Aseer Province is approximately 2,024,285 people according to the 2022 Saudi Census, which represents about 6.3 percent of the population of the Kingdom.
