Abu Malha Palace is one of the historical palaces in Aseer Province, located in the southwestern part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It represents the distinctive architectural style of the province and is one of the prominent heritage palaces in the center of Abha City. The palace serves as a museum showcasing the Aseeri home in all its details, including furniture and more. After its restoration, it became part of the Aseer Regional Museum.

Location of Abu Malha Palace

Abu Malha Palace is located on the outskirts of al-Bahar Square in the center of Abha City. It belonged to Sheikh Abdulwahab Abu Malha, who was appointed by the Founding King Abdulaziz Bin Abdulrahman Al Saud to manage Bayt al-Mal (House of Money) in Abha in 1923.

Restoration of Abu Malha Palace

Abu Malha Palace is considered one of the distinctive landmarks of Aseer Province. It was restored by local hands specialized in the architectural style and construction methods of Aseer Province. The palace differs from other palaces in that it does not include battlements or defensive fortifications, as it was built during the Saudi era, which is characterized by security and stability.

In March 2015, the restoration and rehabilitation project of Abu Malha Archaeological Palace was approved, with a total cost of SAR2.6 million. The palace was transformed into one of the heritage landmarks displayed within the Aseer Museum.

Architectural design of Abu Malha Palace

Abu Malha Palace rises to four floors and covers an area of 3,200 m. It is distinguished by its architectural and decorative elements, with its facades adorned with white gypsum balconies in various shapes. The interior walls are embellished with colorful paintings and geometric and plant decorative patterns.

House of Artisans in Abu Malha Palace

In April 2022, the Heritage Commission launched the House of Artisans initiative by opening three artisan houses at the Amiri School in al-Ahsa, al-Musawkaf Market in Unayzah, and the Artisan Market in Buraydah. The initiative also included the operation of an artisan house in Abu Malha Palace in Aseer Province, specializing in crafts for which the province is famous, such as decorating wall surfaces with al-Qatt al-Asiri art, embroidered handicrafts, sewing traditional Aseeri clothing, and Aseeri wooden crafts like the Qaaid chairs.
