Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve is one of the royal reserves in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is located in the kingdom's northeast, within the administrative boundaries of several regions, including Jawf, Qassim, Hail, Northern Borders, and Eastern Province. In 2018, a royal decree was issued to convert the Taysiyah Reserve and the surrounding areas into a royal reserve under the name of the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve.
The reserve extends over an area of up to 91,500 km and is managed by the Council of Royal Reserves, chaired by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Features of Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve
Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve has a good vegetation cover with more than fifty plant species, including acacia and sidr trees, as well as other shrubs like medlar, Rhanterium epapposum, and Haloxylon. The reserve is a habitat for the endangered Arabian Bustard, though it is not commonly found. In order to preserve the natural migration routes beyond the protected area, endeavors have been made to reintroduce the Arabian Bustard and other endangered species. This enhances the reserve's reputation as a natural extension of the bird's migratory path.
The Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve is one of fifteen protected areas
The existing protected areas include fifteen reserves (twelve terrestrial reserves and three marine reserves) aiming to protect a range of integrated natural ecosystems. These reserves are Hurrat al-Harra, al-Khunfah, at-Tubayq, al-Wu'ul, Mahazat as-Sayd, Jurf Raidah, Farasan Islands, Arouq Bani Ma'arid, Jabal Shada al-A'la, Umm al-Qamari Island, Majami' al-Hadab and Jubail Marine Wildlife Reserves. In addition, there are three areas designated as rehabilitation sanctuaries for Arabian Bustards: Taysiyah Reserve (Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve), Nafud al-Ariq, Saja, and Umm al-Ramth. These protected areas are operated by an administrative and technical body consisting of a scientific director for each reserve and a head of the field patrol team responsible for ground monitoring of the natural habitats within the reserve, preventing violations and encroachments, with support from the aerial surveillance team.
Restoring the environmental balance in the reserve
In February of 2022, the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve Development Authority introduced Arabian oryx, addax, and red-necked ostriches to the Taysiyah Reserve. This was done as part of their program to repopulate and enhance the wildlife and biodiversity of the reserve, and to restore the ecological balance within its boundaries.
Through its various programs, the Authority seeks to raise public awareness about Arabian Sand Gazelle, addax, and ostrich and contribute to the protection and sustainability of biodiversity. It also works on a strategic program that achieves the reserve's objectives in preserving its natural components and creating a sustainable environment for the reproduction and conservation of these species.
