Design of the House of al-Rifai

The House of al-Rifai was constructed by the pearl merchant Ahmed Munawar al-Rifai, who was one of the prominent traders of Farasan in ancient times. Through his numerous business journeys to India, he was influenced by Indian architectural styles and designs. Subsequently, he brought two architects from one of the Indian cities to design and construct the House of al-Rifai according to Indian architecture.

The House of al-Rifai stands as an exemplar of the residences of the wealthy on Farasan Island, distinguished by its beautiful design and inscriptions. It is a masterpiece in ancient architectural art, reflecting the affluence of Farasan during the prosperous era of the pearl trade.

Elements of the House of al-Rifai

The House of al-Rifai was built from stone, reaching a height of six m. Its exterior walls are adorned with geometric gypsum decorations and recessed decorative arches. Quranic verses and supplications are inscribed on its facade. The inscriptions are visible on most sides of the house.
