The Winter at Tantora Festival is held in al-Ula Governorate, which is administratively affiliated with Medina, and is located 300 km away from the province in the northwest of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Al-Ula Governorate is one of the most important tourist attractions in the Kingdom, because of its ancient historical and cultural value. It houses many unique archaeological sites dating back thousands of years, most notably Hegra, which is the first Saudi archeological site to join the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage List in 2008.
The Winter at Tantora Festival celebrates the arts, culture, history, and heritage of the region. The idea behind the festival was inspired by the ancient traditions of al-Ula Governorate residents, who organize an annual celebration at the start of the winter agricultural season. The name of the festival is inspired by a sundial that the people of al-Ula used to tell time and identify seasons.
The Winter at Tantora Festival allows visitors to participate in celebrations. It also hosts many events, activities, and various shows on an annual basis, as part of the Kingdom's continuous efforts to enhance tourism and attract tourists.
