Jeddah Municipality

Jeddah Municipality is the entity responsible for the development of Jeddah and its suburbs in Makkah Province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is concerned with coordinating with governmental entities to develop the structural plans of the governorate and its suburbs. Its responsibilities include providing municipal services to citizens and residents. It is one of seventeen regional municipalities distributed across the thirteen provinces of the Kingdom. The municipality officer is called the Mayor.

Jeddah Municipality is one of the three municipalities in Makkah Province, along with the Holy Makkah Municipality and Taif Municipality. It was called the municipality, and the first to hold the position of Mayor was Ali Salama before it became an Amana. He served as the first mayor of Jeddah, Mohammed Said Farsi, and was followed by twenty-three presidents and mayors until 2023.

Jeddah Municipality is organizationally linked with the Ministry of Municipal Rural Affairs and Housing. It is headquartered in Jeddah Governorate and has fifteen municipalities in the governorates, including al-Lith Governorate Municipality, Khulais Governorate Municipality, North al-Arudiya Governorate Municipality, al-Kamil Governorate Municipality, and Rabigh Governorate Municipality. In addition to sixteen sub-municipalities, including al-Aziziyah Municipality, al-Sharafiyah Municipality, Thuwal Municipality, Airport Municipality, Abhur Municipality, Dhahban Municipality, Historic Jeddah Municipality, and New Jeddah Municipality. In 2005, the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs (currently known as the Ministry of Municipal Rural Affairs and Housing) issued several decisions, including renaming the municipalities of the regions, linking the municipalities and rural complexes, and abolishing the general directorates for municipal and rural affairs. Consequently, Rabigh Governorate Municipality, Qunfudhah Governorate Municipality, al-Lith Governorate Municipality, Khulais Governorate Municipality, al-Kamil Governorate Municipality, al-Qouz Municipality, the rural complex in Adham, and the rural complex in Thurayban located in the Makkah were all affiliated with the Mayor of Jeddah Governorate.

Jeddah Municipality performs several tasks, including working on the cleanliness of streets, squares, parks, slaughterhouses, and public places, implementing projects for rainwater drainage and preventing the dangers of flash floods on roads and streets, and their maintenance, paving roads and streets, executing and maintaining parks and gardens, treating swamps and water accumulation points, executing public slaughterhouse projects, implementing and maintaining public markets and specialized markets, executing and maintenance of aesthetic sculpture projects, preparing and equipping landfills distributing waste containers, supervising the issuance of various professional licenses, monitoring bakeries, factories, and shops to ensure the validity of their products, etc.

On August 30, 2022, Jeddah Municipality launched nine new services through Madinati Digital Platform. This unified digital platform is designed for monitoring and controlling waste movement management, tracking the municipality contractor equipment, coordinating projects, and registering waste producers in an intelligent electronic system. It also sets requirements for tracking service providers to ensure the quality of service and the commitment of waste producers and carriers through electronic contracting and automates work procedures and transactions. The services include: the service for registering municipality contractor projects, the service for registering service contractor projects, the service for qualifying tracking service providers, the service for destruction requests, and the service for adding vehicles and containers.

Between 2008 and 2022, Jeddah Municipality won several awards, including the King Abdulaziz Quality Award, Makkah Excellence Award, Jeddah Creativity Award, Excellence in Information Technology Operations Award, Sustainability and Urban Environment Development Award, Majestic Five Continent Award for Quality & Excellence, the Gold Award from the Web Awards Academy in Arab region, and E-Government Award for Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
