The idea of establishing a railway in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia began in the mid-1940s. It went through several phases before the foundational Law of the Saudi Railways Organization was approved. The start was in 2006, with the Public Investment Fund founding the Saudi Railways Company 'SAR'. In February 2021, the Council of Ministers issued a decision to annul the Saudi Railways Organization and its law, replacing it with the Saudi Arabia Railways 'SAR', under its new name 'Saudi Arabia Railways - SAR'.

1947

Commencement of the construction of the first railway line.

1951

The inauguration of the first railway between Riyadh and Dammam.

1966.

Establishment of the Saudi Railways Organization.

1981

Opening of the dry port in Riyadh City.

2006

Commencement of the construction of a railway line (SAR) connecting the north of the Kingdom with its center and east.

2006

Establishment of the Saudi Arabia Railways Company (SAR).

2011

Commencement of the first phase of the railway line, operating the minerals train.

2016

SAR ownership of the infrastructure for intercity rail transport projects.

2017

Operation of the North Train in its second phase for goods and passenger services.

2018

Launch of Haramain High Speed Railway.

2019

(SAR) ownership of the infrastructure for all railway projects across the Kingdom.

2019

Assigning SAR Company to operate al-Mashaer al-Mugadassah Metro line.

Replacement of the Saudi Railways Organization by (SAR).
