Jeddah Water Tower, or Khuzam Tower, is one of the most important tourist landmarks in Jeddah Governorate, located in Makkah al-Mukarramah Province in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It holds historical significance due to its location next to Khuzam Palace, one of the palaces inhabited by the Founding King Abdulaziz Bin Abdulrahman. The palace witnessed numerous agreements, treaties, and political memorandums, including signing the first oil exploration agreement.
Establishment
The Ministry of Agriculture and Water (currently, the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture) constructed the Jeddah Water Tower during the reign of King Khalid Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in 1977. It is located in al-Nuzlah al-Yamaniyah Neighborhood in Khuzam Palace Garden and is also known as 'Khuzam Tower'. Designed as a mushroom, it covers an area of approximately 1,500 m², has a height of around eighty m, and a storage capacity of about 18,000 m³.
Construction
The upper reservoir of Jeddah Water Tower was constructed above ground. After testing and ensuring there were no water leaks, it was completely painted with dyes. The reservoir, weighing 9,600 t, was then lifted using forty-eight hydraulic jacks. The process of raising the concrete mass continued daily at a rate of seventy-two cm per day over a period of twenty months of the project life.
The construction of the tower was completed with a capacity of 18,000 m³ of water to ensure the stability of the distribution network pressure, balancing the variations caused by daily consumption changes. The Minister of Culture announced a project to restore Khuzam Tower as an architectural masterpiece and revive it with culture and arts.
Contents
The tower includes a restaurant, a reception hall that can accommodate four hundred people, an additional reception room for 150 people, a balcony with a view of the sea, and Jeddah city centers.
